Exciting Companion Programmes

Singapore has continually reinvented itself to become one of the most enticing destinations in Asia, attracting record numbers of tourists with its cuisines, cultures, shopping havens and nightspots. There are many opportunities for nature lovers, conservationists, adrenaline-junkies, and wellness devotees to pursue their interests in this surprising city.

DISCOVER SINGAPORE’S VIBRANT CULTURE AND HERITAGE

A true experience of Singapore’s local cultures will not be complete without a visit to our different ethnic quarters of the island. There is Chinatown for the Chinese, Kampong Glam for the Malays, Little India for the Indians and Katong for the Peranakans (the descendants of 17th century Chinese and Indian immigrants who married non-Muslim natives from the Malay Archipelago).

These colourful precincts offer a meaningful time of cultural immersion and a collage of shopping and dining choices unique to each ethnicity.

MARINE LIFE PARK: FOR THE YOUNG AT HEART

Children and adults alike will enjoy a visit to the newly opened Marine Life Park. Featuring two attractions, the S.E.A. Aquarium is one of the world’s largest oceanarium and has more than 800 marine animals from magnificent sharks to rarely sighted fish.

Visitors can plunge into wet and wild fun at Adventure Cove Waterpark which has adrenaline-packed waterslides, snorkelling opportunities with 20,000 colourful reef fish, and the chance for them to wade and interact with dozens of rays.

GARDENS BY THE BAY: FOR THE NATURE-LOVERS

Spend an afternoon exploring Singapore’s waterfront Gardens by the Bay set in the heart of the downtown city centre. Awarded the World Building of the Year 2012 at the World Architecture Festival, the public botanic gardens span a total of 101 hectares and feature two conservatories as well as towering ‘Supertrees’.

NIGHT SAFARI AND RIVER SAFARI: FOR THE ANIMAL LOVERS

Set in 40 hectares of dense secondary forest, Night Safari is the world’s first night wildlife park. The park has 1,000 nocturnal animals from over 100 species in their natural habitat. The popular Creatures of the Night show should not be missed! Delegates can also hop on-board the Gourmet Safari Express for an unforgettable experience, and those prepared to explore further could follow the several walking trails.

At the new River Safari, delegates can meet over 5,000 aquatic and terrestrial animals representing 300 species. There are 8 river habitats from mighty Mississippi to majestic Yangtze, where visitors can see river giants like the giant river otter and the endangered Mekong giant catfish. Giant pandas Kai Kai and Jia Jia await at the lush Giant Panda Forest – the largest panda exhibit in Southeast Asia.

MUSEUMS IN SINGAPORE: FOR A TOUCH OF HISTORY AND MODERN ART

History comes alive at Singapore’s many interactive and educational museums! History-lovers can start browsing through heritage artefacts at the National Museum of Singapore to learn more about Singapore’s past. Explore more about the city’s multiple ethnic cultures by visiting the Peranakan Museum and the Asian Civilisations Museum.

Culture-buffs can also enjoy one of the world’s largest public collections of modern and contemporary Southeast Asian artworks at the Singapore Art Museum. In 2015, the highly anticipated visual arts institution National Gallery Singapore will also be newly opened to the public. National Gallery Singapore will display and promote Southeast Asian and Singapore art, while hosting international art exhibitions. The future home of the museum is two monumental buildings—the City Hall and the former Supreme Court. At 60,000 square metres, the gallery will be the largest visual arts venue in Singapore.

REGIONAL GETAWAYS

Singapore is widely accessible internationally via air, sea or land, and since the city is in close proximity to the rest of Southeast Asia, IUPESM delegates can easily travel within the fascinating region that is steeped with culture and adventure. Delegates can enjoy quick relaxing beach resorts getaways to islands of Thailand and the Philippines, cultural adventures to Cambodia and Indonesia, and tour UNESCO World Heritage sites in Vietnam, Myanmar and many more.
