Biomedical engineering is a multidisciplinary field in engineering, physics, chemistry, biology and medicine. The Biomedical Engineering Society (BES) Scientific Meeting is an annual symposium organized to provide a platform for students from junior colleges, polytechnics, undergraduate and graduate levels to interact, facilitating the sharing of biomedical engineering knowledge between individuals who share similar interests.

Besides allowing interaction among students, the event shall also provide opportunities for students to learn from academics and professionals in the biomedical engineering industry. This year, the BES 14th Scientific Meeting (BES14SM) in conjunction with IES Innovation Challenge for the Community will be hosted by Nanyang Polytechnic via Zoom.

IES Innovation Challenge for the Community (2021)

Introduction
In 2001, the Community Service Committee (CSC) of the Institution of Engineers, Singapore (IES) mooted the idea of organizing a competition for engineering students to design and build devices and systems to help the elderly and the handicapped. Through this success, the IES Design Awards Competition became an annual event.

In 2015, the IES Design Awards Competition was renamed as IES Innovation Challenge for the Community (IES ICC), and was opened to all Institutes of Higher Learning for all projects that will be of benefits to the community. In 2021, the CSC of IES has agreed to hold the IES Innovation Challenge for the Community in conjunction with the 14th Biomedical Engineering Society (Singapore) Scientific Meeting which will be held via zoom on 15th May 2021.

Objectives
The objective of this competition is to cultivate the spirit of community service in our youth by engaging them to make use of their engineering knowledge and creativity to design and build devices to help elderly, the handicapped, the injured and the community at large.

Rules and Regulations
  1. The competition is open to all Institutions of Higher Learning (IHL)
  2. The competition accepts all projects that are of benefits to the community at large including but NOT limited to assistive, rehabilitative and therapeutic devices, engineering solutions and software systems that can address specific issues and problems of various communities.

Judging Criteria
The Panel of Judges will judge the entries based on the following judging criteria:
  1. Creativity/Novelty. Degree of creative/novel elements in the design (20%)
  2. Workmanship. Degree of safety and suitability of its structural or design (20%)
  3. Ergonomics. Degree of convenience & comfort for its intended use (20%)
  4. “Help” value. Degree of usefulness and assistance to its intended users (20%)
  5. Marketability. Likelihood that the product be produced and sold at an affordable price to reach many by its intended user (20%)

Prizes
Awards and Certificates will be presented to the Winning Teams as follows:
  1. 1st Prize - $1,600
  2. 2nd Prize - $1,200
  3. 3rd Prize - $800
  4. 3 x Merit Prizes - $400 each
Note:
  1. The Merit Awardees will be presented with the certificates and prize money

Submission Process
You will need to submit:
